Rugby asks female athletes to sprint, tackle, carry, ruck and compete through repeated contact. Yet much of the protective equipment used in the sport was historically developed around the male athletes or treated women's needs as an afterthought.
Chest and breast impacts can happen during tackles, collisions, contact with the ball, falls and congestion at the breakdown. They may be dismissed as "just part of the game," but pain and injury can affect confidence, comfort and performance.
World Rugby has highlighted research from Breast Research Australia in which 60% of women participating in contact sports reported sustaining a breast injury. Among those athletes, 33% said the injury adversely affected their performance. World Rugby also reported that 49% of respondents who experienced a breast injury did not report it or seek treatment.

What areas may need protection in Rugby?
Direct contact does not always land neatly in one place. Depending on the position, movement and type of collision, an athlete may experience impact across:

Good equipment should also remain secure during multidirectional movement. Protection that shifts, creates pressure points or restricts shoulder and upper-body movement may be distracting during play.
A sports bra and a chest protector perform different jobs
A well-fitted sports bra is important for controlling breast movement and providing support during running, cutting and contact. World Rugby advises female players to be professionally fitted for their sports bras

What do World Rugby rules say?
